The report quoted Seyyed Jamal Sajjadipour, head of the Agricultural Jihad Organization in Yazd Province. He put the province’s saffron cultivation area at 420 hectares.
Bahabad accounted for 265 hectares and was described as the province’s largest saffron-producing area. Bafq, Mehriz and Abarkuh were also named as important producing counties.
Sajjadipour said the provincial average was 4.5 kilograms of saffron per hectare. He also reported that around 4,000 people worked in cultivation and harvesting. The article’s title projected 1,500 kilograms of output.
Why 420 hectares and 4.5 kg/ha do not equal 1,500 kg
If every one of the 420 hectares produced 4.5 kilograms, the arithmetic total would be 1,890 kilograms. A 1,500-kilogram harvest across all 420 hectares would instead average about 3.57 kg/ha.
The original report does not reconcile that difference. One plausible explanation is that some of the stated cultivation area was newly planted or not harvested at the average rate, but the article does not provide a mature productive-area figure. That possibility should not be presented as a fact.
The safest reading is therefore:
- 420 hectares was the reported total area under saffron;
- 4.5 kg/ha was the reported provincial yield figure; and
- 1,500 kilograms was the reported production projection.
A final crop report would need harvested area and weighed dry saffron before the three could be compared properly.
Saffron yield per hectare in Iran needs a defined denominator
People searching for saffron yield per hectare in Iran kg often encounter numbers that look directly comparable but are not. A new field, a mature field and an ageing field may produce very different flower counts. The result also depends on corm density and condition, soil, irrigation, weather, harvest timing and how the dried product is defined.
A useful yield record states the crop year, location, field age, hectares actually harvested and dry saffron weight. It should also say whether the product is whole filament, cut filament or another form. Without those details, a provincial average is context rather than a promise for an individual farm.

Bahabad’s share of the reported area
Bahabad’s 265 hectares represented about 63% of the 420-hectare provincial total. That calculation confirms why the report called it Yazd’s largest centre for the crop, but it does not reveal Bahabad’s share of actual production.
To calculate that share, the province would need dry output for Bahabad and the other counties on the same basis. Area alone cannot show which district achieved the highest yield or quality.
The original English article rendered the county name as “Behbad.” Bahabad is the established spelling used here, while the report’s connection between that county and 265 hectares remains intact.
The historical seventh-place claim
Sajjadipour described Yazd as seventh among Iran’s saffron-producing provinces. That rank belongs to the time of the report. Production areas and harvests change, so it should not be reused as a current league table without a later dataset covering every province.
He also called Yazd saffron relatively high in quality. Quality cannot be established from provincial origin alone. It requires a representative sample, documented handling and suitable tests for the lot being sold.
ISO 3632-1:2025 sets current specifications for dried saffron from Crocus sativus in filament, cut-filament and powder forms. ISO 21983:2019 addresses harvesting, flower transport, stigma separation, drying and storage before packing.
What the reported 50-hectare annual increase meant
The article said about 50 hectares of agricultural land were being added to saffron each year. It linked that expansion to Yazd’s water constraints and the crop’s fit with local conditions.
That was an expansion rate reported in 2019, not a basis for projecting the province’s current area. Repeating 50 hectares for every later year would invent a trend that the source did not measure.
Farmers also need a fuller water comparison than a description of saffron as a low-water crop. Irrigation volume, timing, pumping cost, soil drainage, crop value and the field being replaced all affect the result. Saffron can suit dry regions without being independent of water.
Does a saffron field have to be replanted after seven years?
Sajjadipour said a saffron planting yielded for seven years and should then be replanted for efficiency. Seven years is best understood as the management horizon in that report, not a universal expiry date.
As daughter corms multiply, a stand can become crowded. Flower yield, corm health, weed pressure and soil condition should determine whether a field is lifted and replanted. Some growers may act earlier; another well-managed field may remain useful longer.
Any replanting programme should keep healthy corm lots separate from diseased or damaged material. Moving corms without inspection can move field problems with them.
Harvest labour and post-harvest capacity
The reported 4,000 participants underline saffron’s concentrated labour demand. Flowers are normally collected over a short period, and stigma separation follows quickly. A province can increase hectares more easily than it can create skilled workers and clean handling capacity at the exact moment they are needed.
Production planning should therefore include collection containers, transport time, separation space, drying capacity, lot identification and protected storage. If those steps fall behind the flower harvest, more planted area does not automatically become more saleable saffron.
How a later Yazd report should present the result
A clear follow-up would publish the forecast and final harvest separately. It would give total planted area, mature harvested area, dry output, yield by field age and the contribution of Bahabad, Bafq, Mehriz and Abarkuh. It would also explain how the reported 4,000 people were counted.
The 1,500-kilogram projection remains useful as a dated marker of Yazd’s developing saffron sector. Its value improves when the headline is read beside the 420-hectare area, the 4.5 kg/ha reference and the missing productive-area denominator, rather than treating a forecast as a final provincial total.
