Increased saffron harvest in North Khorasan up to 18 tons
Mohammad Javad Tashkari, referring to the latest situation of saffron cultivation in North Khorasan, said:
In 1397, North Khorasan produced about 15 tons of saffron, which is expected to be harvested in November of this year,
approximately 18 tons of saffron from the province’s agricultural lands.
He added:
The level of saffron cultivation in North Khorasan has been growing over the past 10 years due to climatic conditions,
water shortages and economic issues, and farmers in the cities of Farooj,
Shirvan and Esfarayen welcomed the fact that the level of saffron cultivation in the last 3 years has exceeded 2,000.
751 hectares have reached 3,650 hectares and 400 to 600 hectares are added to saffron cultivation in the province annually.
The Deputy Minister of Crop Production Improvement of North Khorasan Jihad Agricultural Organization said:
Last year, Farouj city gained the first rank among the cities of the province by cultivating 2,028 hectares of saffron.
He pointed to the amount of saffron cultivation in other cities of the province and added:
Shirvan city with 498 hectares cultivation and Esfarayen city with 278 hectares
cultivation are in the next ranks of saffron cultivation in the province.
Tashkari pointed out:
North Khorasan used to import saffron onions to the province in previous years,
but now this province is one of the exporters of saffron onions to other parts of the country, which has become a good source of income for the province.
He warned against exporting saffron onions to other countries and noted: we must be very careful not to export saffron onions to other countries because its gene is specific to Iran.
