In a 2021 provincial update, 42 hectares of Kurdistan lands were dedicated to saffron cultivation. The more precise figure was 42 hectares and 500 square metres, or 42.05 hectares, spread among 60 growers. Most of those fields were still part of a young, developing crop.

What the 42-hectare figure actually covered

Zahed Hajimirzaei, then director of horticultural affairs at Kurdistan’s Agricultural Jihad Organization, divided the planted area into about 23 productive hectares and 19 hectares that had not yet reached production. Those rounded components add up to 42 hectares, leaving a difference of 500 square metres from the reported provincial total.

The source does not provide a farm-by-farm register that would resolve the difference. It is best understood as a small rounding gap, not as evidence that one of the figures is necessarily wrong. More importantly, the split shows why total planted area and productive area should not be treated as the same measure.

A newly planted saffron field can occupy land before it contributes a meaningful dried-stigma crop. Comparing its harvest with a province where most fields are mature would give a distorted picture unless field age is taken into account.

Dehgolan had the largest named area

Dehgolan accounted for eight hectares, the largest area assigned to a single county in the report. Bijar followed with more than seven hectares, while Sarvabad had more than six.

Together, those three named counties represented at least 21 hectares, roughly half the provincial total. The announcement did not list the area of every remaining county, so a complete district ranking cannot be reconstructed from it.

The distribution is still useful. Dehgolan and Bijar lie in a highland agricultural landscape, while Sarvabad has a different terrain and local climate. Their inclusion suggests that Kurdistan’s saffron development was not confined to one small production pocket. It does not prove that every site offered the same yield or required the same field management.

The 22-kilogram harvest was a forecast

Hajimirzaei expected the province to harvest more than 22 kilograms of dried saffron during that crop year. Dehgolan was expected to provide nine kilograms, the largest named county contribution.

The wording was forward-looking. Unless a final weigh-in from the same season is available, 22 kilograms should remain a forecast rather than be presented as a completed harvest.

Using 22 kilograms and the reported 23 productive hectares gives a lower-bound implied average of about 0.96 kilograms per productive hectare. Dividing by all 42.05 planted hectares gives about 0.52 kilograms per hectare, but that second calculation includes fields described as not yet productive. Neither figure is a farm-level yield, and neither shows how output varied from one grower to another.

Young fields explain the cautious production outlook

The director said many Kurdistan growers were in the early years of production. Saffron is a perennial crop grown from corms, and a newly established field does not instantly behave like a mature one. Field age was therefore central to the low provincial forecast.

He suggested that mature production could reach between five and seven kilograms per hectare. That range was an official expectation, not a measured average demonstrated by the 22-kilogram forecast. Corm health, planting density, soil, irrigation timing, weeds, weather, flower handling and drying can all affect the amount of saleable dried saffron.

The distinction matters for anyone reading the old figures today. A development target should not be mistaken for a guaranteed result, and a province-wide forecast should not be turned into advice for an individual farm.

Why Kurdistan was expanding saffron cultivation

Hajimirzaei described saffron as a crop with relatively modest water needs and strong demand for labour during harvest and processing. He also pointed to its use in the food industry, export potential and possible value for farmers working low-yield land.

Those advantages need boundaries. “Low water” does not mean no water: saffron still needs suitable soil moisture and well-timed irrigation. Employment is concentrated around flower picking, stigma separation and processing rather than spread evenly through the year. Export potential also does not guarantee that every grower will receive an export-level price.

Income depends on more than the crop name. Establishment costs, healthy corms, labour availability, dry-saffron yield, quality control, drying, storage and the price available when the crop is sold all shape the outcome. The old statement records why officials wanted to develop saffron on lower-yield land; it is not a ready-made profitability calculation.

Kurdistan’s broader medicinal-plant programme

Saffron was part of a wider effort to diversify agricultural production. A later Iranian Agriculture News Agency report on Kurdistan’s medicinal plants continued to list saffron among the crops grown in the province. It did not restate the 42.05-hectare total, so the two reports should not be combined as though they describe the same season.

How to read the historical Kurdistan figures

The figures form a snapshot of an emerging sector: 42.05 hectares planted, about 23 hectares productive, 19 hectares not yet productive, 60 growers, and more than 22 kilograms forecast. Dehgolan led the named counties in both area and expected output.

They should not be used as current statistics. Planted area, mature area, grower numbers and production may all have changed since the announcement. Without a later official record using the same definitions, any trend calculation would be speculative.

The most useful conclusion is also the simplest. Kurdistan had set aside a modest but geographically distributed area for saffron, and nearly half of the rounded total was still immature. The success of that expansion could only be judged after those fields reached production and their dried yield, quality and farm economics were measured.
