More than 14 tonnes of dried saffron were forecast from Rashtkhar’s fields in a report issued during the 2012 harvest. The figure was 14,840 kg from 5,400 hectares. It is an important record of the county’s saffron economy, but it is a dated forecast rather than a current production total.

The source and date behind the 14-tonne figure

Ebrahim Asadi, then head of plant production at Rashtkhar’s Agricultural Jihad office, gave the figures during a visit to local saffron farms. The report was carried by ISNA’s Khorasan service and archived on 7 Aban 1391, corresponding to 28 October 2012.

What Rashtkhar expected to produce

Harvesting had begun across 5,400 hectares, and officials expected more than 14,840 kg of dried saffron. Dividing the forecast by the reported area gives an implied average of about 2.75 kg per hectare.

The forecast should not be confused with a measured final harvest. Weather, field age, irrigation, flower density, picking capacity and drying losses can all affect the amount ultimately sold. Keeping “expected” beside the number is therefore essential.

Saffron’s role in employment and household income

Asadi described saffron as one of Rashtkhar’s most important sources of work and income. More than 10,000 people were said to participate directly during the roughly two-month planting and harvesting period each year.

That statement refers to seasonal participation, not necessarily 10,000 permanent full-time jobs. Saffron creates a sharp demand for labour when flowers must be picked and the red stigmas separated, so one harvest can involve many family members and temporary workers.

A 2023 study indexed by FAO AGRIS examined the effects of saffron and pistachio production on 383 households in 26 villages of Rashtkhar district. Drought and water supply were already limiting farms

The 2012 report did not present expansion as effortless. Repeated drought and declining water resources were identified as major obstacles to maintaining farms and the work attached to them. Local officials asked for dedicated support for drought, agricultural losses and water delivery to saffron fields.

Proposed responses included better irrigation methods, suitable technology, crop insurance and direct support for growers. Those are different kinds of protection: efficient irrigation addresses scarce water, insurance manages financial shocks, and improved processing can reduce losses after the flower leaves the field.

An additional 500 hectares and 5% growth

Farmers were reported to have planted another 500 hectares that year, described as a 5% increase over the previous year. The crop is established from corms, sometimes loosely translated as “saffron bulbs” or “onions,” rather than from seed in ordinary commercial production.

The 500-hectare addition and the total harvest area should be read as figures from the same historical reporting period. They do not establish how much land was productive, newly planted or at peak yield in later seasons.

Processing, packaging and export claims

Asadi also pointed to a lack of processing and packaging machinery as a problem for Rashtkhar growers. The earlier translation said that more than 93% of saffron was exported in packages and named the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Spain as leading destinations for Iranian saffron.

Those were attributed market statements from 2012, not current customs data. The phrase does not specify whether 93% referred to Iranian production, exports or a particular packaging form, so it should not be reused as a present-day statistic. What remains relevant is the commercial issue behind it: growers receive more durable value when drying, testing, traceability and packaging are handled well.

Why the quality claim needs restraint

The source described Rashtkhar as holding a monopoly on production of the world’s best-quality saffron. Rashtkhar is an established saffron region, but no comparative test or defined quality measure was supplied to support that absolute claim.

Quality should be demonstrated lot by lot. Clean handling, controlled drying, protection from moisture and light, and recognised laboratory testing offer stronger evidence than a regional superlative. This does not diminish Rashtkhar’s importance; it keeps the claim proportionate to the proof.

How the historical snapshot compares with later reporting

A report from Rashtkhar’s first local saffron festival in November 2025 again placed the harvest area at 5,400 hectares. It did not publish a directly comparable dried-saffron total, so it cannot confirm or disprove the 2012 forecast. Production can change even when cultivated area looks similar. Yield responds to weather, water availability, corm age, field management and the proportion of young fields. A current production claim therefore needs a current harvest measurement, not the reuse of an older tonnes-per-hectare calculation.

What the Rashtkhar report still tells us

The durable story is the size of saffron’s place in Rashtkhar. In 2012 it supported thousands of seasonal roles, occupied thousands of hectares and was central enough to prompt calls for water investment, insurance and processing capacity.

The correct reading of “more than 14 tons” is precise: it was a documented forecast for one historical season. Preserving the date and qualifier makes the figure useful without turning an old agricultural announcement into a misleading current statistic.
