Harvesting of Saffron Begins in Kermanshah
Saffron production in Kermanshah :Saffron harvesting in Kermanshah has officially started, as reported by ISNA/Kermanshah. The horticultural director of the Agricultural Jihad Organization of Kermanshah Province announced that, as a result, the province is expected to produce around six tons of saffron this year.
In an interview with ISNA, Rahman Feyz-Ghorbani shared that 830 hectares in Kermanshah are currently dedicated to saffron cultivation. Moreover, he mentioned that 200 hectares were newly planted this year, meaning the yield will be lower this season.
Saffron Production in Kermanshah
Feyz-Ghorbani explained that saffron is a perennial crop, and it reaches its peak production in its third and fourth years. On average, fields in Kermanshah yield 9 kilograms of saffron per hectare. However, first-year fields yield only about 100 grams per hectare, which is relatively low compared to more mature fields.
He further emphasized that Kermanshah’s high saffron production rate is a result of the province’s excellent suitability for saffron farming, its favorable climate, and high-quality soil. Consequently, the average yield in multi-year fields is more than twice the national average.
Saffron Yield Expectations for This Year
This year, Feyz-Ghorbani anticipates a significant increase in saffron production, with six tons projected to be harvested. In comparison, the province harvested 3.5 tons last year, which shows a marked improvement.
High Quality of Kermanshah’s Saffron
The director further stated that the saffron produced in Kermanshah is of exceptional quality and is considered one of the premium varieties. Based on multiple tests, this saffron stands out for its superior quality, which makes it highly sought after in both local and international markets.
Additionally, he pointed out that saffron is cultivated throughout Kermanshah, except for the Qasr-e-Shirin district, which is unsuitable for saffron farming due to its hot climate. On the other hand, regions like Kermanshah city, Dalahu, Senqukoyayi, Harsin, and Islamabad-e-Gharb are ideal for saffron cultivation.
Saffron Harvesting Timeline
While harvesting has already begun in the warmer regions of Kermanshah, it will continue until December in the colder areas. Therefore, the saffron production process will remain active for the rest of the year.
