
Iranian saffron 6.5 million pound world markets is a mistranslated 2016 headline. The figure in the underlying report was about 6.5 million Iranian tomans per kilogram, not £6.5 million and not a price per pound. Ali Hosseini, then identified as a member of Iran’s National Saffron Council, also quoted a world-market range of US$1,800 to US$2,000 per kilogram.
The article is a historical production-and-trade report, not a current quotation. Its figures belong to the previous Iranian crop and market year described by Hosseini in an interview attributed to ISNA. They are useful for understanding the market at that time, but they should not be carried into a purchase decision today.
What the 6.5 million figure actually meant
The surviving English text changes Iranian price units into “dollars” in several places, while the headline turns the unit into “pound.” Read in context, Hosseini was comparing:
- a domestic price in the previous year of roughly 4 million to 5.8 million tomans per kilogram, depending on quality and market conditions;
- a domestic price at the time of the interview of roughly 4.5 million to 5.5 million tomans per kilogram; and
- a global-market quote of US$1,800 to US$2,000 per kilogram, converted at the time to an average near 6.5 million tomans.
That explains the title’s number without pretending the old exchange rate still applies. It also explains why the same product could have different domestic prices: “saffron” is not one uniform lot. Grade, colour strength, aroma, moisture, physical form, packaging, test results and contract terms all influence the quote.
Historical saffron price per pound
One search question associated with this page is saffron price per pound. There are about 2.2046 pounds in a kilogram, so Hosseini’s historical US$1,800–US$2,000 per-kilogram range converts to approximately US$816–US$907 per pound. The reported 6.5 million tomans per kilogram would have been about 2.95 million tomans per pound at that same historical point.
Those are mathematical conversions of a dated quote, not today’s retail price. Retail packs also cost more per unit of weight than bulk export lots because testing, packaging, distribution, tax and seller margin are added. Anyone comparing prices should first make sure the year, currency, saffron grade and stage of the supply chain are the same.
Production fell to about 210 tonnes
Hosseini said Iran had produced more than 210 tonnes of saffron in the preceding year, about 30% less than the year before. He attributed the underlying agricultural figures to the Ministry of Agriculture and said more than 80,000 hectares in South Khorasan and Razavi Khorasan had been planted with saffron.
On those numbers, average dried-saffron yield was about 2.6 kg per hectare. Hosseini argued that raising average performance to 4 kg per hectare could lift output above 320 tonnes without requiring the planted area to expand. The arithmetic is straightforward: 80,000 hectares multiplied by 4 kg equals 320,000 kg, or 320 tonnes.
The target should not be read as a guaranteed farm result. Yield varies with field age, corm size and density, soil, irrigation timing, climate, nutrition, weed pressure, harvest labour and drying. A peer-reviewed overview of saffron production and agronomy reports a very broad yield range across growing systems and stresses that both field management and post-harvest handling affect the final spice.
Was 210 tonnes enough for export demand?
Despite the production decline, Hosseini believed supply still broadly matched the amount the market could export. The translated report says one exceptional year reached about 200 tonnes of exports, while the usual annual range was approximately 130 to 150 tonnes.
His reasoning was that a 210-tonne crop could cover export demand plus other uses, provided speculative dealers did not disrupt purchasing and exports. This was an industry assessment, not a complete national balance sheet. A proper supply calculation would also need domestic consumption, opening and closing inventory, processing losses, informal trade and exact customs periods.
Research based on Iranian production data has since estimated different national averages for different study periods. One study of saffron production and virtual-water trade in Iran, covering 2008–2014 data, reported average production around 228.5 tonnes and average yield around 4.14 kg per hectare. That does not invalidate Hosseini’s single-year 2.6 kg estimate; it shows why the date and dataset must travel with every production claim.
Packaging restrictions and export recovery
Hosseini said exporters had faced restrictions related to packaging at the beginning of the preceding year. He then described exports as improving during the second half and continuing to grow into the year of the interview. The machine translation does not preserve the exact rule or reporting end date, so it would be unsafe to reconstruct the measure from memory.
The commercial point remains clear. Packaging rules can affect which lot sizes an exporter may ship, how costs are distributed and where value is added. But packaging alone does not establish product quality. Buyers also need traceability, laboratory results, storage history and a specification agreed in the sales contract.
Quality was Iran’s strength, according to Hosseini
Hosseini called the production and supply of the world’s highest-quality saffron Iran’s greatest strength. That is an attributed industry opinion, not a conclusion that every Iranian lot outranks every lot from another origin.
Quality has to be demonstrated batch by batch. The current ISO 3632-1 specification for dried saffron applies to filaments, cut filaments and powder, while the associated test framework allows laboratories to assess relevant characteristics. Origin can be valuable context, but it does not replace sampling, authentication, moisture control and documented test results.
Destructive competition was the reported weakness
Hosseini identified destructive competition among traders as the industry’s largest weakness. In his view, short-term undercutting and “overnight” business practices damaged price stability and reduced the additional value retained by Iranian saffron.
That concern fits the wider export problem described in the report. If suppliers compete only on immediate price, they may have less room to invest in grading, reliable packaging, brand development and stable relationships with buyers. On the other hand, cooperation must not become price fixing. The safer objective is transparent quality-based competition: comparable specifications, honest origin, consistent delivery and clear unit prices.
How to read a world-market saffron quotation
For anyone researching world market saffron, a useful quote should state more than one headline number. Check:
- the date and currency;
- whether the unit is a kilogram, pound, ounce, mesghal or gram;
- the grade, form and crop year;
- whether the price is farm-gate, wholesale, export or retail;
- the minimum order and packaging format;
- which laboratory specification or certificate applies; and
- freight, insurance, tax and payment terms.

What the 2016 figures can still tell us
The report’s main comparison survives the poor translation. Production had fallen to a stated 210 tonnes and 2.6 kg per hectare, while Hosseini believed a 4 kg average could restore output above 320 tonnes. He considered the remaining crop sufficient for a normal export range and saw Iranian quality as a competitive advantage, but worried that unstable trading would erode it.
The 6.5 million figure belongs to that same historical frame. It was a toman conversion of a US$1,800–US$2,000 wholesale or export quote per kilogram—not £6.5 million, not a permanent global benchmark and not a current saffron price per pound.
