Concerned about the future of the Persian Red Gold was the message of a 2019 report about competition, production methods and weak coordination in Iran’s saffron sector. The concern was not that saffron had lost its value. It was that long experience in cultivation would not, by itself, protect growers or the country’s position in international trade.

The statement behind the headline

The original article reported remarks by Gholamhossein Shafei, then chairman of the Iran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, at a meeting of South Khorasan’s Government–Private Sector Dialogue Council. He described the province as small in population and area but rich in human and natural capacity.

His warning was direct: Iran should not assume its historic relationship with saffron guarantees a secure future. He named two pressures—the arrival of more producing countries and insufficient use of new production tools—and said the Chamber was prepared to support a deeper study of the sector.

The report’s translated wording called the crop’s original home “Khazra-Zanjan.” That phrase is unclear and should not be treated as a reliable place name. The defensible point is that the speaker associated high-quality saffron and large-scale knowledge with Iran and the Khorasan region. That commercial and agricultural heritage does not mean no other country grows saffron.

Why experience alone is not enough

Saffron is often called Persian red gold because a small amount of dried stigma carries substantial value and because the crop has deep cultural and economic roots in Iran. Yet a reputation built over generations can weaken if buyers receive inconsistent lots, cannot verify origin or find suppliers elsewhere who offer clearer specifications and steadier delivery.

Competition is therefore broader than farm yield. It includes clean harvesting, prompt stigma separation, controlled drying, accurate grading, appropriate packaging, traceability and dependable export documentation. A grower can produce excellent saffron and still receive too little of its final value if the rest of that chain is weak.

Current international trade records also show why complacency would be misplaced. Countries beyond Iran participate as producers, importers, processors and re-exporters. The sensible response is not an unsupported claim of exclusivity; it is a product whose identity and quality can be demonstrated at every sale.

Quality has to be measurable

“Iranian saffron” and “premium saffron” are meaningful descriptions only when the physical product supports them. The current ISO 3632-1:2025 saffron specification covers dried saffron in filament, cut-filament and powder forms. A buyer may also require market-specific tests, residue documentation, packaging controls or a particular product cut.

For a producer or exporter, that means keeping the lot connected to its evidence: where and when it was harvested, how it was dried, how it was stored, which sample went to the laboratory and which finished packs came from that batch. A laboratory result detached from the sold lot proves very little.

Modern production should solve real field problems

Shafei’s reference to “new tools” should not be reduced to buying machinery. Technology is useful when it addresses a documented constraint. Field mapping can improve area records. Soil and irrigation measurements can guide water use. Better collection containers and shorter delays between picking and separation can protect delicate flowers. Controlled drying can reduce variation between batches.

Mechanization also needs a realistic test. Saffron flowers sit close to the soil, emerge over a short season and are traditionally picked by hand. A device that works in one field may struggle with uneven ground, planting layout or flowers at different stages. Cost, maintenance, damage rate and the labour saved all belong in the decision.

The goal is not to make every farm identical. It is to measure enough of the process to repeat what works and identify where quality or yield is being lost.

Value-added products need evidence and a market

The 2019 report said saffron consumption was moving beyond household use toward pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications and called for more “conversion industries”—businesses that turn a crop into packaged or processed products. That was the speaker’s market assessment, not a measured global consumption split.

Value-added work can include consumer-ready packs, carefully formulated foods, standardized ingredients or lawful cosmetic products. Each path has different technical, safety and regulatory requirements. A preliminary study on a saffron extract does not allow a company to claim that ordinary threads treat a disease, and a traditional use is not proof of clinical effectiveness.

A sound project begins with a real buyer problem: smaller verified packs for retail, stable ingredients for a manufacturer, clearer provenance or less quality loss between harvest and sale. Processing without demand merely creates another product that must be stored and sold.

Reliable statistics are part of competitiveness

A serious study of saffron’s future needs compatible numbers. Planted area should be separated from productive area; fresh flowers from dried stigmas; forecasts from final harvests; and domestic trade from customs exports. Crop year and calendar year should not be mixed without explanation.

Those distinctions matter when public bodies, universities and private businesses plan investment. A processor cannot size a facility from an optimistic forecast, and a grower cannot judge a price trend from export value alone. The role of government and private business

Shafei linked the saffron issue to a wider need for cooperation between government and the private sector. He criticized rules that were unclear or interpreted differently from one province to another and argued that meetings should produce solutions, not only lists of problems.

That division of responsibility remains useful. Government bodies set and enforce plant-health, food-safety, customs and labelling requirements. Standards organizations define common specifications and methods. Universities can test agronomic and processing claims. Growers, laboratories, packers and exporters have to maintain the records that make compliance and traceability real.

Cooperation does not mean removing independent checks or treating every business interest as the national interest. It means assigning each problem to the institution able to solve it and publishing enough evidence to judge the result.

What a stronger future for Persian red gold looks like

The future of Persian red gold is better protected by verifiable work than by slogans. Farms need practical improvements suited to their soil, water and labour conditions. Buyers need consistent lots and honest descriptions. Researchers need well-defined material. Public agencies need comparable statistics, and growers need a fairer connection to the value created after harvest.

The warning in the original meeting was worth preserving: a leading position can be lost when a sector relies on history while competitors improve.
