20% reduction in saffron harvest in cold regions of Khorasan Razavi
Horticulture director of Khorasan Razavi Agricultural Jihad Organization announced a 15 to 20 percent reduction in saffron harvest in cold regions of the province.
Mohammad Reza Ghodsi stated:
Saffron harvest in cold regions of the province is not over yet and is underway,
but due to field visits in these areas and a sharp drop in temperature in recent weeks, the harvest of this product has decreased to some extent.
He added:
Saffron flower-producing organs have suffered from severe cold due to low and long-term temperatures and reaching minus 7 degrees Celsius,
and snow, hail and freezing of the soil surface layer have made it difficult for flowers to leave.
The director of horticulture of Khorasan Razavi Agricultural Jihad Organization said:
Bardaskan, Khalilabad, Kashmar, Gonabad and Maholat counties are among the tropical areas where saffron flower harvest
has not been completed and the total harvest can not be announced yet.
He pointed out:
saffron flower harvest in tropical areas of the province has just begun and has not yet reached its peak,
so the exact statistics of harvest and decrease or increase will be announced
by mid-December and at the same time as the end of saffron flower harvest time.
Ghodsi reminded:
Torbat-e Heydariyeh, Zaveh, Neishabour, Chenaran, Mashhad and Fariman cities
are cold regions whose saffron fields have decreased due to cold weather.
He said:
Some saffron growers, who started irrigating their fields earlier, also harvested flowers earlier, so they did not suffer from any problems or damage due to the cold weather in cold regions.
