Most of Iran’s saffron is exported to Spain and the UAE

The President of Torbat Heydariyeh University, stating that most of our target countries for saffron exports are European countries, said:
Currently, most of Iran’s saffron is exported to Spain and the UAE.

Lireza Karbasi, pointing out that 20,000 hectares of land in Torbat-e Heydarieh, Mahwalat and Zaveh are under saffron cultivation, said:
Saffron production in Iran, in addition to Khorasan provinces, is developing in all provinces,
even in the west of the country.

He added:
Iran annually exports more than 200 tons of saffron to countries around the world,
while the amount of saffron production in Spain as the second largest producer after Iran is 25 tons,
and this shows Iran’s share of more than 90% in world saffron production.

Regarding the large cities producing saffron, Karbasi said:
Torbat-e Heydarieh with 19 thousand 581 hectares,
Kashmar with 8 thousand 850 hectares and Ghaenat with 5 thousand 243 hectares are the largest producers of saffron in the country.

He mentioned the authorship and translation of 50 books and more than 150 student dissertations related to the subject of saffron
as some of the scientific activities carried out in Torbat-e Heydarieh in relation to this important product.

Karbasi continued:
Holding the Iranian Saffron Festival and National Conference,
holding the International Saffron Conference and the above national gold festival have been among our specialized conferences
in the field of this product.

He pointed out:
Specialized journals of saffron research in Birjand and saffron agriculture and technology.
