Harvesting 72 kg of saffron from farms in West Azerbaijan

Regarding Jihad Keshavarzi’s West Azerbaijan measures to combat water shortage and reduce water consumption in the agricultural sector, Sol Jalili added:
Saffron is one of the most important export products of Iran,
with the production and export of which significant foreign exchange enters the country every year.

He continued:
During the last few years, the area under cultivation of this crop in the province has reached about 48 hectares
and its yield has increased by an average of 2 kg per hectare, and this year it is expected that about 8 hectares will be added to this area. .

Jalili added:
Due to the existence of susceptible microclimate in this province and on the other hand due to the low need
of this plant for water and irrigation during the summer, the development of cultivation of this crop in the province has begun and is increasing.

He considered saffron as the best option for cultivating an alternative and profitable crop for farmers and noted:
unlike many agricultural products, there is no need. It does not need irrigation and is a strategic plant to get rid of water shortage crisis.

The head of the West Azerbaijan Agricultural Jihad Organization continued:
and the cities of Urmia, Naqadeh, Miandoab, Shut, Piranshahr and Salmas had the highest area under cultivation of this crop in the province.

Jalili added:
Saffron is one of the medicinal plants and the development of cultivation of water-deficient medicinal plants is also one of the priorities
of the Jihad Agricultural Organization.
it naturally needs suitable and mild weather these days.

During the dormant or resting period of the plant , rain or irrigation is harmful to it.
Therefore, cultivation is not common in rainy areas (north) and warm regions of the south of the country,
It is not suitable for the growth of saffron.

West Azerbaijan is one of the 31 provinces of Iran, which is located in northwestern Iran and its center is the city of Urmia.
This province has about 1000 km of main roads and highways that connect the northernmost point of the province
to the southernmost region of the province (Buchan) and has the possibility of good land connections.
West Azerbaijan is the only province bordering Turkey.
