Cold Damage to Saffron Potatoes in North Khorasan
The secretary of the agricultural risk management headquarters in Khorasan-e-Lahan said the fall cold brought about 200 hectares of saffron farms in the province.
Abdul Hussein Namvar, in an interview with Isna’s correspondent, pointing out that the area cultivated in this province is 1238 hectares, adding that at the beginning of December this year the temperature of the air in some areas of the province reached a negative 13 degrees Celsius, which caused Damage to farmers who have not yet collected their produce.
He said that at the present time an initial estimate of damage to saffron farms has been made and the final result has not yet been announced, adding: “Most of the frost damage on farms in Saffron province during this harvest season has been in the cities of Esfarayn, Jajarm and Shirvan.
Namwar responded to the question of how much damages to the province’s gardens and farms in general have occurred in recent colds. He said: “The figures were announced last week, but after the meeting, we concluded that we would have another revision to estimate the damage.”
He argued that most damages to the cereal fields of the province, such as wheat, barley, sugar beet, and rapeseed, explained that some estimates of damages were made in the form of production costs, and some in the form of damages to manufactured products that should be corrected.
The official said the planting season of some products, such as wheat and barley, has not yet been completed, and cold-damaged farmers can re-cultivate these products.
