The director of Khalkhal Agricultural Jihad announced the beginning of saffron harvest from the farms under cultivation of this precious agricultural product in this city.

Behbood Alizadeh added: This year, 21 hectares of potential agricultural lands of this city have been allocated to the production and cultivation of saffron, which has increased by one hectare compared to the maximum cultivation area of ??this agricultural product last year.

He said: According to the average yield of 3.5 kg of saffron production per hectare, it is predicted that this year more than 77 kg of dried saffron will be produced and marketed in the fields under cultivation of this product, which is a 10% increase compared to last year’s saffron production in this city. Will have.

He stated: We are trying to become one of the saffron cultivation and production centers of the country in the future by promoting the cultivation of this product among the farmers of Khalkhal region by providing incentive and support packages to saffron growers in Khalkhal city.

He said: This year, with the aim of supporting the saffron growers in the region, more than one ton of certified saffron onions was prepared from its producing provinces and given to saffron farmers in the prone areas of Shahroud and Khorshorostam Khalkhal.

Alizadeh added: in order to develop saffron cultivation, 3 billion and 270 million rials of cheap and expensive banking facilities and also 50 million rials of subsidies for buying onions of this product per hectare have been provided to saffron growers in the region.

He explained: Experimental cultivation of saffron in Khalkhal started in 1371 and since 1381 by providing support packages to saffron farmers, including holding training courses, planting, harvesting and harvesting of this product and preparation and distribution of free saffron onions Cultivation of this expensive product by Farmers in the area were taken seriously.

He mentioned the eightfold reduction in water consumption per hectare compared to other agricultural products, the fact that the irrigation season of this product does not interfere with other agricultural and horticultural products, high employment capacity and favorable economic efficiency as the benefits of saffron cultivation in Khalkhal.

He added: The best time to plant saffron onions is late summer and the most suitable time to harvest it is October and November and according to the weather conditions in the subtropical regions of this region and each saffron onion is able to flower for seven years in Khalkhal city.

The director of Khalkhal Agricultural Jihad said: in addition to cultivating and producing a valuable saffron agricultural product in Khalkhal, this area is suitable for cultivating various medicinal plants such as Golmohammadi, Nastaran Vahshi, mountain barberry, hawthorn and wild pistachio (Daghdaghan). 420 types of medicinal plants identified in Ardabil province, 230 types are specific to different areas of the city and these medicinal plants are found in areas prone to growth.
