Afghan saffron will never compete with Iranian saffron
While some experts point out that the development of saffron cultivation in Afghanistan is a threat to Iranian saffron,
a member of the National Saffron Council stated:
Given that Iran produces more than 90% of the world’s saffron, Afghan saffron can never be a threat to Iran. .
In recent years, Iranians have taught Afghans how to grow saffron and offered to expand the production of this product instead of poppy.
However, Afghans have made good progress in this field and have been able to produce about three tons of saffron in their country.
However, some stakeholders, including the vice president of the Saffron Exporters’ Union,
have cited the development of cultivation in neighboring countries and other countries as a global uprising to take over Iran’s
position in saffron production.
While Ali Hosseini, a member of the National Saffron Council, while emphasizing on maintaining the saffron production position in Iran, stated:
about 300 tons of saffron is produced annually in the world, with Iran producing and supplying about 270,000 tons,
producing and supplying more than 90% of the world Other countries produce only 10% of this product.
He added:
Some countries, such as Afghanistan, which produces about one percent of the world’s saffron, can never be a threat to Iranian saffron.
A member of the National Saffron Council emphasized:
During the past years, many countries tried to compete with Iranian saffron and even shake the position of Iranian saffron,
but saffron production in terms of quantity, quality and price is such that no country can compete with it.
