9 hectares of Meybod farms went under saffron cultivation
The director of Meybod agricultural jihad announced the allocation of 9 hectares of farms in this city for saffron cultivation.
Saying that saffron is a low-water-loving plant, Sadr Pourkoosari said:
In order to develop the area under cultivation of low-water aquatic plants, 9 hectares of lands in Meybod city have been allocated for saffron cultivation.
He called this product a suitable alternative for water-loving plants such as alfalfa, watermelon, melon and other weaving products in Meybod city and said: “Fortunately, Sadrabad Nodooshan region in this city has more suitable climatic conditions for saffron cultivation.”
According to the official, six hectares of arable land in the Sadrabad section of Nodooshan are fortunate, and fortunately the product is of high quality.
Pourkosari stated:
Saffron is a five-year-old, low-watering plant that begins to bear fruit in the third year and needs to be watered only two to three times a year, and manpower is needed only at harvest time.
He also pointed out:
the time of planting this product is September to early October and the time of harvest is the first half of November.
The director of Meybod Jihad-e-Keshavarzi said that the favorable weather conditions of Sadrabad Nodooshan caused the expansion of cultivation of this plant in the region and said:
Considering the favorable weather conditions, this year’s harvest is expected to be higher than last year.
In the end, Pourkoosari pointed to some problems of farmers in this sector in Meybod city, including a 30% increase in the price of saffron onions compared to last year and the problems of importing it from other cities such as quarantine and health issues of saffron onions. He mentioned the existence of intermediaries and brokers.
