80% reduction in saffron harvest this year in Iran
When we spent the winter of last year and the bone-chilling cold, we thought less of the damage our farmers had suffered;
When they saw the cold pomegranate trees with a chainsaw, their eyes were on their other crops,
but … but this autumn, with the barrenness and ineffectiveness of the saffron lands, it added to the problems of the farmers, because in previous years, about four kilograms of saffron per hectare Sargol was harvested, but this year,
Compensation for frost damage requires adequate nutrition, fertilizer, and irrigation to improve the situation over the next three years,
although damaged farmers in the area, who have hoped to improve, have so far received less support.
Engineer Swabi, director of Kashmir Agricultural Jihad, pointed out that each hectare of saffron created employment for 10 people
during the harvest season, and claimed: This year, employment per hectare of saffron was only 2 people,
so unemployment and economic problems in the region face social harms.
Referring to the 80% decrease in saffron production this year in the harvest season, he added:
This is a big problem for farmers in the region who, in addition to frost orchards and agricultural products,
see a decrease in saffron production,
although its price due to a slight increase significantly.
He continued:
the increase in its price on the one hand reduces the demand and on the other hand different countries of the world are willing
to cultivate this product and in the long run the world saffron market is out of Iran.
Although currently 90% of the world’s saffron is produced in Iran, but with the increase in price in recent years, many countries, including China,
Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, etc., have begun to grow saffron,
which has reached the areas under saffron cultivation in Those countries will bear fruit in the next two or three years,
if we do not plan to maintain markets for saffron, like carpets, the market will be out of our hands.
Meanwhile, government support for exporters and long-term investment to acquire new markets and maintain existing markets
can improve the saffron situation in the region so that farmers suffer less losses from market fluctuations.
