60,000 hectares of land in Iran are under saffron cultivation
Vice President of the National Saffron Council of Iran in Birjand said:
the area under saffron cultivation in the country is about 60,000 hectares.
Mohsen Ehtesham, Vice President of the National Saffron Council of Iran in Birjand,
on the sidelines of the meeting of the National Saffron Council of Iran in South Khorasan said:
Last year, about 150 tons of saffron was harvested from the area under cultivation of this product in the country.
He added:
Currently, 98% of the country’s saffron is produced in the provinces of Khorasan Razavi and South Khorasan and 2% in other parts of the country.
The Vice President of the National Saffron Council of Iran mentioned the lack of liquidity,
high marketing costs and introduction of specialized saffron export units in world markets,
price instability in the domestic market and saffron fraud in world markets as the most important problems of the Iranian saffron industry.
Ehtesham added:
We must make every effort to brand and create a suitable position for this original Iranian product in the saffron consumption
basket of the people of the world.
He stated that the reduction of saffron consumption in world markets due to the excessive increase in saffron prices in recent years,
poor organization and management of the saffron market and the existence of non-specialized and uncontrolled activities are other problems
of this industry in the country.
The Vice President of the National Saffron Council of Iran in Birjand said that currently about 10 specialized,
planned saffron export units are active in the country in a principled and planned manner.
Ehtesham pointed out:
About 40 natural and legal persons active and prominent in the country are the exporters of this strategic product.
