20% reduction in Iranian saffron exports during the corona

Ali Shariati Moghaddam, pointing out that Iran is the exclusive producer of saffron in the world, said:
Between 95 and 96% of the world’s saffron is produced in Iran, and this year our production will increase by 15% compared to last year.

He mentioned the line under saffron cultivation in the country as 140,000 hectares and said:
red gold cultivation is done in more than 20 provinces of the country.

The head of the Agriculture and Related Industries Commission of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce added:
Since 1396, the price of saffron has been declining with a steep slope,
because we are facing some surplus so that production has increased but consumption has not changed much.

Shariati added:
We also have tariff problems with some countries, including India,
and this issue has caused Iranian saffron to be exported to India through Afghanistan.

However, foreign exchange regulations and the many changes that have taken place in the directives,
as well as the issue of sanctions, which has restricted foreign exchange exchanges for exporters, said the private sector activist,
noting that the issue of foreign exchange commitment is a principle and I agree with it. It has created problems.

He added that saffron has a high price and is a small and light product. Its smuggling increases, adding:
We are currently witnessing that this product goes to some Arab countries and Pakistan and leaves the country unofficially.

He also explained the effects of the corona outbreak on the saffron market:
With the outbreak of the corona, products have become important for countries that have a high priority in terms of food security,
while we are also witnessing a decrease in people’s purchasing power.
The closure of restaurants, airlines and parties that we see around the world has also reduced saffron consumption.

Shariati continued:
In addition to saffron, other agricultural products, including ornamental flowers, have suffered a lot from this issue.

Shariati added:
The next discussion is the reduction of international relations, transportation and international flights,
all of which have been effective in the saffron market.

He said:
Saffron exports increased slightly last year before the outbreak, but after the corona we saw a decrease in exports in this area.

According to the head of the Agriculture and Related Industries Commission of the Iranian Chamber of Commerce,
saffron exports during the Corona period in terms of weight have decreased by 15 to 20 percent..

Shariati continued:
Scientists around the world are working on plant products that can boost the body’s immune system.
One of the properties of saffron is that it makes the drug smarter and increases the effect of the drugs.

The private sector activist also said about the strategies for organizing the saffron market:
We have a plan called organizing the saffron economy and a comprehensive saffron plan on the agenda and the exporters agreed to allocate money
for research development, value chain development, market development and supporting producers.
Give.

Shariati added:
We also had meetings with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and in these meetings we requested that leading agricultural products, especially saffron,
and Agriculture and the Iran-India Joint Chamber to reduce the export tariff on Iranian saffron, which is currently 60% with commercial profit,
and to reduce the tariff on some products imported from India, including pepper.

In another part of his speech, referring to the fact that about 30 countries are looking to grow saffron, he said:
Several companies in the Netherlands grow and export saffron onions.
Different countries have turned to cultivating this crop, and there is concern that we will find many competitors in this field in the coming years.
